Collaborating with Hyundai Motors Company, I developed UX principles and guidelines for electric vehicles using quantitative and qualitative research methods. Due to confidentiality issues, I cannot discuss the detailed process and outcomes in depth. This page briefly describes the overall project process and what I have learned.

Intro.

As the paradigm of mobility is shifting towards electric and autonomous vehicles, the focus is shifting beyond just driving to the overall experience inside the car. Cars now connect with services like ride-sharing and offer new features for comfort and safety.

What's needed now are some clear rules on how to create and test new car-related products and services that are easy and enjoyable to use. These guidelines should ensure everything is user-friendly, whether it’s using the car’s controls or enjoying in-car services, all centered on great user experience principles.

Development of Solid In-Vehicle UX Evaluation Framework

Reflection

  • Importance of Thorough Research and Data Synthesis: I learned the significance of immersing myself in comprehensive research and found that effectively synthesizing large volumes of data is key to distilling complex information into practical, industry-shaping UX guidelines.

  • Value of Understanding Real-World Context: Conducting contextual inquiries, such as analyzing auto shows and YouTube videos for brainstorming, taught me the necessity of understanding real-world interactions and the context in which users engage with products, thus deepening my insights into user behavior and patterns.

  • Strategic Categorization and Visualization Skills: Through the use of tools like Miro boards, I honed my ability to categorize vast numbers of UX issues methodically and present them visually, enhancing my strategic planning and communication skills as a UX designer and researcher.

Employing rigorous on-site observations, detailed case studies, and contextual inquiries, I formulated a comprehensive UX framework. This framework presents a set of adaptive UX principles and guidelines tailored for potential industry implementation.

Demonstrated leadership in organizing and conducting cross-functional meetings that bridged the gap between manufacturing engineers and product designers, fostering a collaborative environment that was essential for the integration of UX principles into the decision-making process.

Successfully identified 750+ UX issues to create a comprehensive set of general UX principles and guidelines. The generated framework included 3 UX principles, 15 detailed principles, and 153 actionable guidelines, which were crucial in enhancing usability in the automotive industry.
